A shop worker used his inside knowledge to burgle the shop where he worked of cash and goods worth more than £10,000 and left behind an apology note to the owner, a court heard.

Prasath Thangaraju, 27, had only worked at Nelson Road Food and Wine shop for six days when he carried out the burglary, Norwich Crown Court heard.

Duncan O’Donnell, prosecuting, said that Thangaraju de-activated the burglar alarm as he knew the code and stole cash takings of £2,275 and also tobacco, mobile phone top-ups cards and alcohol totalling more than £10,000.

Mr O’Donnell said he left behind an apology note for the burglary but forgot about the security cameras on the premises so was captured leaving the shop with the alcohol and tobacco in a rucksack.

He said that Thangaraju was arrested in April, this year, and said he was a Tamil student who had overstayed his visa and now faced deportation, after any sentence imposed.

Thangaraju, of no fixed address, admitted the burglary and was jailed for 14 months.

Sentencing him, Judge Katharine Moore said that it was a “mean offence.”

“It was an abuse of a position of trust.”

Richard Kelly, for Thangaraju, said he had come to the UK as a student but had then overstayed his visa.

“The reality is he had no money. He left a note of apology.”

He said that Thangaraju was of previous good character and now faced being deported when he served his sentence.

“He is now going back to India under a cloud.”
