A senior Church of England bishop and former vice-dean of Norwich Cathedral has been interviewed under caution by detectives on suspicion of indecently assaulting a girl more than 30 years ago.

The Bishop of Gloucester, Michael Perham, 66, was questioned on Tuesday by officers from the Metropolitan Police.

Perham was also questioned about an alleged indecent assault on a woman but was not arrested.

The alleged incidents are said to have occurred between 1980 and 1981 and are being investigated.

Perham, who was vice-dean of Norwich Cathedral from 1992 to 1998, left his post as the Bishop of Gloucester suddenly, ahead of weekend services.

He was due to take part in the service of remembrance on Sunday, but others took his place.
