Firefighters were scrambled to Gorleston this afternoon after a blaze tore through a ground floor flat

Crews from Great Yarmouth, Gorleston and Lowestoft used breathing apparatus to extinguish the flames, after being called to the property in Links Road at about 1.15pm.

The crews spent several minutes tackling the flames as they worked to contain the fire and stop it from spreading to surrounding flats.

One man suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to the James Paget Hospital by ambulance crews for further assessment and treatment.

Glen South, station manager in Norwich, was among the firefighters at the scene and praised the work of the crews, who stopped it from spreading. He described the blaze as “severe” and said the flat was left with “substantial” damage.

A resident, who lives in another of the ground floor properties, said she smelt smoke before coming outside and seeing the flames leaping from windows at the back of the flat.

She said: “There was explosions and all the windows were smashing. It was like what you see on telly, with big flames coming out of every window.

“We all got out and just gathered outside. The neighbours have been brilliant and came out to see if we needed anything.”

An investigation officer is due to attend the scene to establish the cause of the fire.
