A former teacher who sexually assaulted a 14-year-old boy was jailed for 12 months today.

John Redman, 52, of Kempe Road, West Lynn, was sentenced at Norwich Crown Court after being convicted of one charge of sexual assault and three counts of having unsupervised contact with the victim and another boy.

Recorder Katherine Moore also banned Redman from working with children for life and he was made the subject of an indefinite sexual offences prevention order (SOPO).

The court was told that a previous order had been imposed on Redman, a former science teacher at Hunstanton's Smithdon High School, in April last year and barred him from having unsupervised contact with boys under 16.

But the 14-year-old, who had carried out odd jobs for Redman, told the trial that he was assaulted on July 31.

In a victim statement the boy said he had now stopped working in the area, became upset and angry without reason, and it had led to stress in the family home.

Neil Guest, for Redman, said the defendant accepted he had a problem that needed addressing.
