An 18 carat gold diamond ring thought to be worth £31,000 will be auctioned off by police - unless the rightful owner comes forward.

Police in Great Yarmouth have made a fresh appeal for the true owners of the valuable ring to get in touch before the jewellery is sold.

The ring was seized from an offender - later charged with theft - who claimed he found it near Gorleston High Street in September 2009. Officers have been trying to find the owner ever since.

Valued for insurance purposes at £31,000 by a London jewellers; the ring is a 3.5 carat diamond set in an 18 carat gold band. According to valuers, it has very few flaws and is a very good quality stone but made to fit a small ring size.

Supt Nick Davison, Great Yarmouth district commander, said: “The ring is to be sold shortly under police regulations and the net proceeds will be distributed to local charities via the Norfolk Community Foundation. We would obviously prefer to reunite the ring with its true owner but if this is not possible then giving the proceeds to charity is a positive step for local communities.”
