Chief Insp Neil Baily told Cromer town councillors that from January 9 the Holt Road station would “become a 24-hour base covered by five officers”.

He said the move had come as a result of a countywide review of where officers were based.

He said: “It’s not a bad story. The outcome is that we are getting a significant increase in police numbers on the coast. We’ve been doing rather well to keep things as they are when the current model is implemented.”

He said the changes at Cromer were a “really significant step forward”. He added that the town was currently covered from Aylsham.

Chief Insp Baily said: “For all my district of North Norfolk and Broadland, they are the beneficiaries of the review.”

He added that the changes flew in the face of reduced numbers across Norfolk, saying: “There’s been a freeze on recruitment for more than a year. Ninety to 100 police officers will leave the organisation each year.

“Because they haven’t been replaced, we are 100 police officers less than we would’ve been. We’ve been having to manage with a bit less.”

He added that the increased numbers on the coast showed “the rural parts of North Norfolk need proper levels of policing”.

Town councillor David Pritchard said: “I think it’s important that we show our gratitude to the police on this significant occasion where it has been recognised that Cromer needs a 24-hour police station.”

The improved coverage is the latest step forward since the replacement police station was opened next to the North Norfolk District Council headquarters at the end of 2009.

The building, which replaced the Victorian facility next to the old Cromer courthouse, also on Holt Road, was initially going to have no place for public inquiries.

But, following a local protest, a window was added to enable officers to respond to visits from the public.

The News contacted police to find out how the review would affect other local police stations, but no-one was prepared to comment.

  • Paul - You are quite right. The Victorian police station was built in Church St in 1879. The one on Holt Road was built between the wars.

  • The old victorian police station is the building between Merchants Court & the shops at the east end of town. The police station on Holt Rd is late 20's or early 30's, certainly not Victorian.

  • According to the article, Cromer police station is only being used as a base 24 hours a day. It will not be open to the public 24 hours a day. The headline is therefore rather misleading. In fact as far as I am aware there is not a front office in any Norfolk police station that is manned 24 hours a day. Sorry to pour cold water on this particular idea but 5 officers ( I take it they are all regular officers and not a mix of Pcs and PCSOs) will not be able to provide Cromer with 24 hour cover when you take out rest days, leave, sickness, training, court appearances etc etc. The very, very best will only be 16 hours. For decades Cromer, with far more officers than it currently has, has never been able to provide 24 hour cover and I feel this story may be giving local residents an unrealistic expectation.

  • Perhaps being slighlty naive here but why would a policestation not be open 24 hours in the first place? or did it only cater for 9 to 5 criminals?
