Families living in Bixley Close, which Kelly and Jodie Barnes used to call home before being arrested on suspicion of the murder of Barry Reeve, have spoken of their shock at discovering they had killers in their midst.
One neighbour said: “We were all shocked to hear what they had done. I didn’t think they were capable of that, not two women, you don’t think they could do that to anyone. It was awful.
“It’s unbelievable that two women could do something like that to someone. I’m just glad they’ve gone. My daughter-in-law said it could’ve been me. You don’t know who you’ve got living next to you.”
She said no-one had been aware of the couple, who had lived there for about 15 months, having done anything untoward until the police turned up to arrest Kelly.
She said: “I looked out and saw a lot of police cars. The police were here for about a fortnight.” She said the two women spent most of their time together at the house.
The neighbour said: “They never mixed. I didn’t have a lot to do with them.
“I would say hello to them, otherwise I didn’t have anything to do with them.
“I felt sorry for the kids more than anything.”
She does however remember an incident the summer before last where the couple got into an argument with another neighbour.
She said: “They were swearing in the front garden and the neighbour was in the garden and they started having a go at her. It was for no apparent reason.”
She added: “Apart from that they were very quiet in there apart from when Jodie shouted at the kids.
“I’ve heard her shout to the kids you either stay in your bedroom or go to the park. They would have to stay up the park till about 5pm then they could come home.”
The neighbour said she felt sorry for the children.
Another neighbour said she was also stunned to find out what had happened and described the couple as nice people but who had a “chip against the world”.
She said: “Now it’s all come out, I’m really shocked.
“Now I know what they did to him I can’t believe it, I really can’t. I’m just so sorry for the gentleman’s family.
“For him to die is bad enough, but for him to be tortured as well as everything else... It’s just very hard to understand. It’s shocked everyone around here.”
