A mystery baby was reburied 26 years after his body was found in a Norfolk beauty spot.

The newborn’s body was found by teenagers in a pond in Weasenham St Peter on June 5, 1988.

Despite a police investigation his parents were never been found.

Now officers are launching a new appeal in the hope that someone will have information that can help to find them.

In April this year the body was exhumed from its grave at St Peter’s Church, Weasenham, so that a DNA sample could be taken. Today’s service saw the body returned to the grave.

The exhumation took place after new information was received by police but inquiries did not take the investigation forward.

Det Insp Andy Guy said: “Despite years of enquiries both at the time the baby’s body was found and more recently following new information, we still have not identified who the parents of this infant were and the circumstances around his death.

“Clearly the location is an important factor and there will be people out there that know the answers to the identity of the parents of this poor child. I would ask them to have the courage to come forward.”

The baby’s body, wrapped in a blanket and inside a Sainsbury’s bag, was discovered by four teenagers who were playing at Windmill Pit in Weasenham.

“We now have a DNA sample so it will be possible to establish the parents’ identity and we hope this will encourage people who may have not been confident enough before to come forward now. Please help us to find out who this baby was and how he came to be in Windmill Pit.”

Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact the Major Investigation Team at Norfolk police on 01953 424516.
