Ron Gower, 85, and hiw wife June, 82, celebrated their diamond wedding on Saturday, June 10, and shared the perfect Norfolk love story with this newspaper.

On reading the story, First Eastern Counties approached the couple’s daughter Lorraine Cyder to arrange the surprise.

Mrs Gower said: “This is very nice, we thought all our gifts were finished. We had no idea this was going to happen.”

Her husband added: “The idea was to go for lunch but when we were heading that way we got ambushed.”

They first met on the 11b bus to Norwich as they both worked in the city. Mr Gower was an apprentice cabinet maker and Mrs Gower a hairdresser. It was Mr Gower’s girlfriend of the time who introduced them.

From that first meeting they were inseparable. Going on dates to films every week at the Odeon in Norwich and spending every weekend together.

Chris Speed, head of operations for First Eastern Counties, said: “From seeing the story in the paper we just felt there is something we needed to do here.

“You hear quite often about people meeting on the bus but so many years later you never get the opportunity to see them. To be able to arrange this with some flowers and some champaign is really good.”

The couple first tied the knot on June 10 1957 at the United Reformed Church in Mrs Gower’s home town of Bungay before enjoying a honeymoon in Great Yarmouth.

“It rained on our wedding day, but we will be thinking of you [Mr Speed] when we enjoy the champagne.” Mr Gower added.

Mrs Gower said: “I hope this is the only surprise we have left, I can’t take much more as my age won’t allow it.”

The couple lived in the city before settling down in Hellesdon, bringing up their daughters, Sharon Whyte and Lorraine Cyder. They later retired to Brooke.

Mr Speed said: “Just speaking to them now they were really surprised and have been able to share some lovely stories,

“It’s nice to see couples nowadays that are still in love after all these years.”
