City hosts similar to the London 2012 games makers could be welcoming people and giving out tourist information in Norwich’s city centre later this year.
The city’s Business Improvement District (BID) plans to recruit a team of volunteer city hosts to welcome, guide and assist visitors, shoppers and people living and working in the city.
Stefan Gurney, from Norwich BID, said the volunteers would play a similar role to the London 2012 games makers, and Norwich BID was currently recruiting for three paid positions – a city hosts manager and two part-time supervisors – to lead the team.
Their roles will include coordinating volunteers, assisting visitors, monitoring city streets and issues, linking with businesses, assisting with events and being champions for the BID area.
Mr Gurney said: “We are welcoming applications from people passionate about Norwich. They will work with the volunteers to give a better experience for people coming to the city.”
He added: “The aspiration is the city hosts will have a really positive impact on people’s experience of the city, helping people find interesting and different places to visit, and promoting the city as a friendly place to be. If you want to know where a specific place is, or where to find the best Italian restaurant, you could ask a city host. The idea is the city hosts will be a helping hand and add to the value of the city centre and show people it is a friendly and vibrant city.”
He said they hoped to start recruiting for the volunteer roles in June.
“Our long-term plan is that we will have volunteers in the city seven days a week hopefully from 10am until 6pm. The hope would be to have more than 50 volunteers,” he said.
The closing date to apply for the city host manager or part-time supervisor roles is May 8. For an application pack email email@example.com or call 01603 727930. People interested in registering an interest in being a volunteer city host can also email firstname.lastname@example.org although recruitment for volunteers is not likely to begin before June.
