Two football matches are being played in Dereham over Christmas in memory of popular local men.

On Christmas Eve, Phil Goillau will be remembered as his friends compete at the town’s football ground at Aldiss Park, Norwich Road, 1pm. Spectators are being encouraged to attend,

Phil, 25, of Toftwood, died last year while taking part in the Norwich half-marathon.

The trainee IT teacher at Notre Dame High School in Norwich twice played in a friendly Christmas Eve match between former school mates.

Now the game is being contested in his honour and raising money for the children’s charity - the Variety Club 12 Marathon Challenge - which he was supporting. Last year about £450 was collected and they are hoping to double it this year.

It is being organised by Sam McDonnell and Gary Matsell, who worked with Phil at Morrisons supermarket in Dereham.

There is a raffle with prizes including tickets to see Jason Manford in Norwich.

Meanwhile, on Boxing Day, there will be a game to remember Ben Pyke and to raise money for Quidenham Children’s Hospice.

Ben died aged 35 in 2007 and was a popular man in the town,

A match in his honour has been played for years and two teams will picked on the day.

The game starts at 10.30am at Neatherd High School, Norwich Road. Players and spectators can either meet at the Railway Tavern at 9.45am or go straight to the school. Players will pay £5 to play and there will also be a raffle.

Paul Sandford, who runs the Tavern and was a friend of Ben’s, said: “He was a real character and always had a beaming smile.”
