A Chinese film star and UEA alumnus is set to return to her former university today as part of a campaign aimed at strengthening links between China and the UK.

Jiang Shuying, who studied a masters degree in media economics at the University of East Anglia and has carved an award-winning acting career in her home country, is an ambassador for the UK government’s Spirit of Youth campaign. The campaign, which aims to promote a deeper collaboration between the next generation of leaders in China and the UK, was launched in July by the Princess Royal, Dame Barbara Woodward, the British ambassador to China, and Jiang Shuying.

Today the actress will return to the UEA to explore her old university with a film crew and share her experiences of studying in the UK. Her day in Norwich, supported by the Department of International Trade, is part of a week-long trip which also includes visits to the British Museum, BAFTA and the Shard in London.

At the Spirit of Youth launch, Jiang Shuying talked about the value of her time in the UK. She said: “I chose to study in the UK because of the first-class educational experience provided by UK higher education institutions. But it was also to broaden my horizons. I have always been captivated by British film and fashion. I wanted to experience the culture that produced such creativity and innovation and tour the sites that inspired so many iconic films and writers, old and new. I’m honoured to be part of the Spirit of Youth campaign and to help inspire the youth of China.”

The actress rose to fame for her role in the 2013 film So Young, which won her Asian Film Award for Best Newcomer. She then starred in family drama A Servant of Two Masters and won Best Supporting Actress at the Huading Awards. In 2015 she starred in medical drama Grow Up and romantic comedy My Best Ex-Boyfriend, and in 2016 starred in To Be a Better Man and Call of Heroes.

Karen Blackney, head of the UEA International Office, said: “We’re delighted to host Jiang Shuying as part of the Spirit of Youth campaign. This is a great opportunity to celebrate her success and that of many of our international graduates, while showcasing the benefits of studying in the UK and celebrate our links with China.”
