A shirt signed by Chelsea football stars has helped boost a north Norfolk man's bid to raise £100,000 for a breast cancer charity in his sister's memory.

Charlie Dyke, his family and friends are still reeling this week at the success of the fourth annual Helen's Heroes evening, held in North Walsham Community Centre.

The event brought in £5,600 – more than double the previous occasion, according to Mr Dyke, 61, who owns three convenience stores in North Walsham.

It will go towards their aim of raising £100,000 by 2020 for the Breast Cancer Campaign, in memory of Helen Plummer, who died from the disease, aged 44, in 2006.

Despite her illness, mum-of-four Mrs Plummer herself raised £11,000 for the cause. Mr Dyke and his supporters are continuing her work and have raised £60,000 in the past nine years.

They aim to raise £15,000 this year towards their ultimate target and the Heroes night saw some 230 people pack the community centre to enjoy local band Night Train, a disco, food, raffle and an auction, where family friend Granville Yaxley wielded the gavel.

The top auction price of the night was £800, paid for a Chelsea shirt, signed by the current squad, which was donated by John Terry, whose uncle is a customer at Mr Dyke's Happisburgh Road store.

Mr Dyke said: 'It was an absolutely brilliant evening – something special – and I can't thank everyone enough for helping with it, and supporting it.'

Despite a very late night, he and his wife Mary were up and out training for the London Marathon the next morning.

The couple will be joined for the April 13 race by daughters Vicky Harmer and Michelle Grant, sons Jamie and Matthew, and sons-in-law Lee Grant and Russell Harmer, running together for the cause as Helen's Heroes.
