Daredevil teddy bears will be leaping out of a plane over Sheringham this summer in a brand-new carnival event.
The six parachuting super-teds have just arrived and each has found a home with one of Sheringham’s businesses where they will raise money for good causes.
Carnival organisers are urging everyone to choose names for the bears, with a chance of winning £100 cash.
Supporters can choose a name at £1 a time by visiting the Ted Devils parachute display team bears in their new homes. Six winning names will pulled out of a hat and those who chose them will also win their named bear.
The six winning bears’ names will also be pooled and one drawn at random. Its chooser will receive £100.
Supporters can find the teds at: Blyth and Wright hardware, Station Road, (raising cash for the Sheringham Playpark Revamp project), Dawn Fresh greengrocer’s, Station Road, (East Anglian Children’s Hospices), Ellie’s Café, seafront (Holt Rugby Club), Sanders Coaches (Sheringham Sports Association), and Roy Boys café, Station Road,(Help for Heroes). There is also a carnival bear, supporting a range of local causes from his home in Bertram Watts bookshop, Church Street.
Each business will be dressing its bear, as well as making its all-important parachute.
On Sunday August 3, the day Sheringham’s carnival queen is crowned, the teds will take their seats in a Yak 52 aircraft, following its aerobatic display over the town with pilot Nigel Willson at the controls.
They will then leap out and carnival-goers will be invited to bet on the bear who lands closest to a mark on the beach. Winners’ names will be placed in a hat with one chosen for another £100 prize.
Carnival committee member Emma White said everyone was excited about the teddies’ arrival. Sanders’ ted would be riding in the cab with bus drivers on local routes.
“We’re hoping it will generate a lot of interest in the carnival between now and the summer,” she added.
■ Carnival week will run from August 2-10, preceded by a Viking Festival on February 22-23 , carnival queen selection on April 11, classic car and bike show in June, and Harley Davidson bike invasion in July.
