Brancaster Staithe Sailing Club (BSSC) is holding an open day for anyone who would like to have a go at sailing or for those who would like to get back onto the water where either is for free.

Visitors at the ‘Push the Boat Out’ event, held on Saturday May 10, will also have a tour of the harbour and the opportunity to have a look round the sailing club.

The event is part of a nationwide celebration of sailing from the Royal Yauchting Association (RYA) where open days will be held across the country.

Mark Foley, who has organised the event at the BSSC said: “It gives people a taste of sailing and if they like it we can tell them how to get into the sport. Norfolk is a fantastic place for sailing; there are 60 miles of coast, plus the Broads, the rivers too and the county is full of great sailing clubs and excellent sailing schools.

“It is a good sport for anyone - it can be for any age and also for disabilities. It gets people out into the water.

Sailing is a sport you can do for all of your life and you’ll have lots of fun and meet many new friends along the way. Brancaster Harbour is a safe and beautiful place to start.”

Mr Foley, 53, has been sailing and off since the age of nine. He came to live in Norfolk in 1994 and a few years later joined the BSSC.

Mr Foley hopes that the open day will attract more local members for the sailing club.

He organised last year’s Push the Boat Out event which saw 43 people turn up for the event, and this year could see around 120 visitors attend.

There will be a bar which serves food open all day which may bring the opportunity to have a chat with other sailing club members.

The open day starts at 1.30pm, with sailing from 2.30pm - 5.30pm as high tide is 4pm.

No experience is necessary and would-be sailors of all ages are welcome. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
