Football fans will have the chance to get their hands on some world-famous silverware when the Barclays Premier League trophy visits Great Yarmouth.

The sparkling cup is coming to the town next Tuesday as part of a nationwide tour during the Easter holidays.

Fans both young and old will be able to get their picture standing beside the glittering trophy when it drops into the multi-use games area on Southtown Common.

The stopover has been coordinated by Great Yarmouth Borough Council and Barclays, the Premier League’s title sponsor.

The bank is taking the trophy to 15 communities across the country as part of its thank you campaign, which aims to recognise fans, community heroes and players for the way they support, volunteer and play the game, from grassroots football right up to the top flight.

Fans are encouraged to bring their own cameras and are being urged to arrive at the common in good time as access to the cup will be on a first-come-first-served basis.

As well as getting snapped with the trophy, budding sports stars will also be able to try their hand at a number of activities, including cricket, hockey, golf and football, through taster sessions being laid on by Active Norfolk.

Cllr Lee Sutton, the council’s portfolio lead for sport and leisure, said: “The Great Yarmouth borough is delighted to host the Barclays Premier League Trophy. For sports fans like me, this is an exciting once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get up close to one of the world’s most famous trophies, which you normally only see on TV.

“The visit will also help to raise awareness of the local opportunities available to residents to take part in sports and physical activities, and to further promote the facilities at Southtown Common, which also boasts a recently-extended skate park and a fitness trail.”

David Wheldon, managing director of brand, reputation, citizenship and marketing at Barclays, added: “This season we want to say thank you to those who make such a positive contribution to football and the premier league.

“We hope seeing the Barclays Premier League trophy at Southtown Common will inspire the young players and the volunteers to continue playing and supporting football.”
