A 24-year-old has progressed from barmaid to landlady at a popular Norwich pub in just a few years.

Jacqui Danks started at The Champion in Chapel Field Road about two years ago, and when landlady Annie Goulding decided to leave, to run a bar near Skegness, she applied for the job at the Bateman's Brewery-owned pub.

She said: 'I had done quite a lot of training and I pretty much knew how to do most of the job anyway. I've been told that I'm one of the youngest landladies in Norwich. It's exciting.

'I pretty much want to keep things as they are, as people in the past have tried to change things, and it's not worked.

'This is always going to be a traditional English pub. I'm into my music and have opened up a back room for darts.'

As reported, The Champion, which was named after bare knuckle boxer Daniel Mendosa, who visited Norwich in 1790, has had an eventful few years. In 2011 it was burgled and then daubed with graffiti three months later.

Meanwhile, in 2009, the then landlords were subject to a vicious attack by unruly customers.
