Norfolk celebrities are backing a campaign to wear silly socks next month as part of a project to raise funds and awareness for a Norwich-based charity.

Fundraisers are being urged to knit their own colourful socks or decorate them to “sock it” to eating disorders to support Beat.

Actor Stephen Fry, TV presenter Jake Humphrey, Ironwoman Chrissie Wellington, and former Norwich City winger Darren Eadie have signed up to the campaign by the eating disorders charity and will be signing decorated socks to be auctioned off to raise funds.

Officials from the charity hope that local schools, businesses, sports teams and community groups will get involved in the week-long event.

It is the first time the charity has run the sock it to eating disorders campaign, which will be run during eating disorders awareness week from February 11 to 17.

The charity, which has its national headquarters in Prince of Wales Road in Norwich, needs to raise around £1m a year to fund its support services.

Around 250,000 people get help from the charity every year through its helpline and network of 125 support networks across the country for people with anorexia, bulimia nervosa, binge eating and compulsive overeating disorders.

Susan Ringwood, Beat’s chief executive, said: “We feel sure it will be an easy, fun and affordable way for anyone to contribute towards our vitally needed funds. We certainly had fun providing the images that are used in the campaign.”

Other celebrities also backing the Beat campaign are actors Victoria Wood, Celia Imrie, Michelle Collins and Chloe Sims from The Only Way is Essex.

The signed socks will be auctioned off by Darren Eadie’s online charity auction site Sellebrity.

The charity has also teamed up with students from the film school at the University of East Anglia to make a film promoting the campaign featuring people who have received help from the charity, which will be launched online next month.

Beat provides a range of services including a helpline, email service, self help and support groups and training for healthcare professionals.
