The man, believed to be aged in his 40s, was working on a dark Rover saloon parked beside the Salvation Army in Tolhouse Street, Great Yarmouth when the incident occurred.

Emergency teams including the fire brigade and ambulance were called to the scene at 1.30pm.

Police sealed off Yarmouth Way and Tolhouse Street while teams worked on the man, before he was taken to the James Paget University Hospital in Gorleston.

Neighbours said the man was given chest compressions for several minutes before he was stretchered into the back of an ambulance.

An officer in the police control room, speaking at 9.30pm today, said the man was in a critical but stable condition.

The roads have now been re-opened.
