Archant Norfolk.

Thousands of cyclists helped raise an estimated £100,000 for charity on Sunday on a rain-drenched course that took them through the heart of Norfolk in the annual Norwich 100 ride.

The 20th annual Norwich Bike Ride, in aid of the British Heart Foundation, saw more than 3,000 participants tackle routes of 25, 50 or 100 miles, starting at City Hall and finishing at Norwich Cathedral.

Organise John Lister said this morning’s rain may have put off some people who would otherwise have registered on the day, and seen others complete a shorter route than they had originally planned.

Tacye Blest, event organiser for the British Heart Foundation, said: “You could do this bike ride on any day of the year, but doing it together does create this camaraderie.

“We have had a lot of new riders. I was talking to some people on the start line who have never done the 25 miles before, and said they will come back next year and do 50.”

She added that many people she met took part for personal reasons, including a group remembering an uncle who died of heart disease, and a man who took part despite having a heart attack a few months ago.
