After a hugely successful year on the market, a baker has taken the leap and opened her own cafe.

Nestled on Upper St Giles Street, Cupcake & Co, opens today, but has already been attracting passersby with its creme egg brownies and cupcakes in the window.

Whether you fancy some elderflower gelato, creme brulée tea or peanut butter blondies - it has the remedy for every sweet tooth.

Self-taught baker Anne Falgate, from the Ringland area, swapped her job at a school for creating cupcakes and has never looked back.

In a whirlwind she collected the keys to her cafe a week ago and now her vintage-decorated cafe offering locally sourced products including hand decorated cake plates and coffee, has opened its doors. Soon it will also stock handmade cards by Pills and Pencils.

Mrs Falgate, said: “The idea is that if it is someone’s birthday, people can pop in and get a cake, a lovely cake plate and a card - easy as that.

“My customers are lovely and very supportive, I have not put a note on my market stall to say I’m moving yet and they have already been up here.”

Baking everything at home and adding the finishing touches in store, sweet treats can be taken away in bags made from recycled paper.

A loyalty scheme is also in place, where if shoppers sign up, they will receive exclusive offers via email, text, twitter or Facebook.

She added: “We will mix it up how people find out about the deal, I want to reward my customers for coming here.”

  • These sugar addicts will probably end up spoiling the street. Those desperate for a fix will lurk furtively and could effect house prices. A dark day for Norwich.

  • I wish you all the luck in the world with your venture and look forward to popping in there soon. I can't believe how quickly you have achieved this. It is true, you do reap what you sow and you have definitely done this. It's great to see that you achieved so much in such a short time, although I would imagine it's not been easy at times. You go girl, it's well deserved...

  • Good luck to this venture - I wish it every success. --- .JLN: I don't suppose any of those people you claim fill our hospitals because of their own irresponsible behaviour-addiction was forced to feed their cravings. As no one is forced to fill these pages with crass remarks and downers. ---

  • Ted, quite the contrary, I love a nice cupcake, though a fresh cream and jam doughnut is more my thing. I was just remarking that a while ago cupcakes were the latest self-employed business craze. I knew a friend that spent £15000 of her redundancy, building a custom kitchen to make cupcakes. After it was built she found it untenable not to mention the market was swamped with...cupcakes. Around 2009 people were going crazy doing all sorts of stuff with little regard for market or their own skills, luckily they have all fallen by the wayside. Now the dust has settled, perhaps cupcakes can be a going concern. I wish her luck. I'm sure my other half will pop in sometime.

  • Well aren't you just a bundle of fun. Have you never heard of moderation, the poor women isn't suggesting you eat there everyday. Show a bit of support for someone making an effort, if people dont have the self control to restrict the amount they eat that reflects sadly on the individual not this lady trying to make a living.

  • Our hospitals are full of people who have diseases caused by their sugar addiction, the product should be treated like Tobacco, many doctors think sugar is far worse, when will we learn ??

  • Cupcakes? Wow its like its 2009 all over again when everyone wanted to make them for a business, not realising that everyone else was making them too. Anyone business networking in the small business world in Norfolk back then will know what I mean. I guess this lady was the last one standing? Well done.
