Work which could have caused huge disruption to Dereham’s town centre has been called off.
National Grid had originally planned to close off the High Street for four days in June while work to connect two flats to a new gas supply was carried out.
The work was postponed and rescheduled for earlier this month. The scheme was then put back again while National Grid explored alternative ways to connect the property without closing the road and digging up the High Street.
A solution was found, thanks to Dencora, the owners of Dereham Shopping Centre which includes Wilkinson.
A National Grid spokesman said: “There’s a large pipe which feeds the Wilkinson store and they have allowed us to take a feed from that system to connect the properties. We’ve had to excavate in the car park.
“It’s a big thank-you to the shopping centre and Wilkinson who have enabled us to make the connection to the property without digging up the High Street.”
The work to connect the properties to the gas supply was due to be completed by the end of yesterday.
Nigel Sizeland, Dereham Shopping Centre manager, said: “It’s absolutely fantastic news for Dereham.
“Whenever we have had road closures in the past, people have got round it but it involves a lot of redirection signs and slowing down of traffic which possibly puts some people off.”
