The fire service was called to reports of the blaze at about 5.15am today but after tackling it for nearly three hours a spokesman admitted there was very little salvageable.

Steve Mableson, station commander with Suffolk Fire and Rescue service, said that crews from Bungay, Beccles and Harleston were sent and that when they arrived the roof had collapsed.

He added that at the time they did not know if anybody was inside, but they later found out that the owner had been staying with relatives locally.

Mr Mableson said: “It was a very good job she was not there. It could have been a very different scenario.”

He added that a fire investigation was taking place but that there was no reason for suspicion.
