Robert Kybird has been elected as the new chairman of Breckland Council.
Mr Kybird, who represents Thetford’s Guildhall ward, was chosen at a meeting this morning and presented with the chain of office by outgoing chairman, Paul Claussen.
Ann Steward was appointed as vice chairman.
Mr Kybird, who was first elected to the council in 2003, said: “I am looking forward to representing Breckland across the county and further afield.
“Having recently returned from visiting the Somme battlefields and war graves I am particularly looking forward to supporting the many WW1 commemoration events this year. These events remind us all of the consequences of war – the sacrifices that were made and the millions of young lives that were lost”.
“Kybirds have lived in Norfolk since 1500 and the county, particularly the Breckland area, is a wonderful place to live and work. During my year in office I hope to present a very positive image of Breckland; with the dualling of the A11 many new opportunities will arise for both residents and businesses in the district.”
The meeting also saw Mr Claussen present a cheque for £3,827 for Caister Lifeboat to Paul Garrod, Chairman of the Caister Volunteer Lifeboat Service.
Mr Claussen said: “It has been a great privilege to represent the Council and to have met so many truly remarkable people. I would like to thank the mayors, chairmen, organisations and charities who have invited Carolyn and myself to functions and events over the past year. I would also like to thank everyone who kindly donated money to my chosen charity, Caister Lifeboat.”
