Brandon postman Kevin makes very special delivery after baby Emilie is born in Halfords car park

After 16 years as a postman, Kevin Sobiechowski is used to making sure packages arrive safely.
But the 34-year-old, from Brandon, had his most important delivery yet when he had to play midwife for newborn daughter Emilie – in Halfords car park.
Mr Sobiechowski and wife Ellen, 30, were caught short after their midwife told them they had “plenty of time” to make it to West Suffolk Hospital, in Bury St Edmunds, when Mrs Sobiechowski’s contractions started at around 6pm on May 16.
By 10pm, the contractions were quickening. But again the midwife told the couple to wait before heading to the hospital.
Mr Sobiechowski said it was not until two hours later that they made a move.
“We made a mad dash at midnight and got to Fornham All Saints when Ellen’s waters broke,” he added.
“We pulled over at Tesco and called the midwife again and she said we’d have at least 10 or 15 minutes to make it to the hospital.
“We set off again but two minutes down the road my wife said, ‘It’s coming’.”
The couple pulled over in the nearest car park – Halfords in Robert Boby Way – with Mr Sobiechowski quickly calling the midwife again.
“The midwife asked how far along we were, and by the time I got to the other side of the car to answer her, the head was out,” he said.
“I threw the phone away, flung my coat down and carried on.
“Fortunately she started crying straight away and that was a massive relief.”
Two ambulances arrived later to escort the couple to hospital, with Emilie weighing in at 7lb 5oz.
Mr Sobiechowski, who is also manager of Lakenheath Football Club, said his role in the drama was somewhat different from the birth of his first daughter, two-year-old Isabelle.
“The first time I was not interested in the business end at all – I couldn’t even bring myself to cut the umbilical cord.
“This time I didn’t have much choice in the matter, and once the adrenalin kicked in, that just took over,” he said.
