There were fears the town centre supermarket could shut as rival chain Sainsbury’s prepares to open a new store in the out-of-town Beacon Park, creating 350 jobs.

But Morrisons has dismissed the rumour.

A spokesman said: “We do not have plans to close the store and Morrisons Gorleston will continue to trade as usual.”

  • It appears self evident to me that by approving the opening of a second Supermarket (about) a mile up the road from an existing Supermarket "creating" 350 jobs then this will put at risk the business and jobs at the existing Supermarket (Morrisons). Secondarily it appears self evident that the existing Supermarket located at the centre of Gorleston has a positive impact on the general businesses in Gorleston and that they could be at risk from the opening of a new Supermarket outside the town centre. Smart move eh from those who approved the new Supermarket - nice bit of headline grabbing "CREATE 350 jobs" - appalling long-term strategy for Gorleston!

  • Both can survive as their clientele is totally different. Morrison's in Gorleston is for OAPs who like stand around chatting in the way of other customers. Sainsburys is for people who think they're better than everybody else but don't like using the one in town because of the eastern Europeans in there. Totally different

  • Went into Sainsburys in Yarmouth for the first time in ages thinking it`d be a pleasant change and found a couple of locals having a proper fight in the foyer! Police were there tussling with them and there was plenty of obscene language (And they weren`t Eastern Europeans)
