The Ministry of Defence’s Bomb Disposal Team had to be called to the Stanford Training area (STANTA) near Thetford on Monday after a shell fired on exercise failed to detonate.
The team from Colchester had to fight its way through traffic due to a jam on the A11 to reach the site, where gunners have been carrying out Operation Sphinx Resolve.
An MoD spokesman said: “An artillery round fired during Exercise Sphinx Resolve was observed to have not exploded and range staff were immediately informed by the exercising troops. There is no public access to the impact area, additional safety measures were put in place and all range users were informed. The shell was found on Monday afternoon and destroyed in-situ by a bomb disposal team from Colchester Garrison.”
