Police and fire investigators are at the scene of the tragedy, in Beeston Road, which has been taped off and is being guarded by a police officer.

Emergency services were called to reports of a fire at the property at about 4pm.

A police spokesman said: “A deceased person was found within the premises. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the cause of death.” He was unable to give any more details.

Unconfirmed reports say that the bungalow was lived in by an elderly woman who had health problems.

Police carried out door-to-door enquiries in the neighbourhood yesterday evening asking residents if they had seen anything suspicious.

Fire crews from Sheringham, Cromer and Holt attended the fire, wearing breathing apparatus and using hosereel jets.

A thermal image camera was used to check for hot spots and a large ventilation fan was used to clear the building of smoke.
