The Blundeston in Bloom group is celebrating after winning the large village gold award for the region in a popular annual contest.

The group, which is made up of a tireless band of volunteers who give their time generously to ensure Blundeston has plenty of floral decorations around the village, scooped gold for the first time in the Anglia In Bloom awards.

A group spokesman said: “This year the theme of royalty was chosen to celebrate events of the royal calendar and, with the support of the Blundeston art club, corgis, crowns and a wedding cake adorned the planters while sentries guarded the postbox.

“The centenary of the Armistice was also a key feature with local schoolchildren marking the event by placing small crosses by the village sign planters which bore the names of soldiers from Blundeston who had fallen during the First World War.”

Two judges from Anglia in Bloom visited the village on July 11 and were very impressed with what they saw. They gave a very positive appraisal and commented that the floral impact on entering Blundeston was most eye catching. In particular, they praised the local bowls club and bowling green who had participated for the first time and made a splendid effort.

“The entire village was a riot of colour with some amusing and clever additions for the royal theme,” the spokesman added.

“In addition, Blundeston held its most successful Open Gardens weekend this year attracting more than 500 very appreciative visitors who visited the 14 gardens on show.”

With Blundeston in Bloom being “a very active group” which raises most of the funds from events run throughout the year, the spokesman added: “Local businesses and villagers are always very supportive and contribute towards this wonderful success.”
