A blood-spattered empty car, discovered on its roof at Hevingham, prompted a police helicopter search for its occupants on Friday night.

Emergency services were alerted to the single-vehicle crash, near the Marsham Arm's pub on Holt Road, at about 11pm.

A police spokesman said there was no sign of anyone in the car, but there was blood present. They had asked for air support to search the surrounding area in case the driver and any passengers were lying injured in nearby fields.

The driver, the only occupant, had later been traced at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. He was not believed to have been seriously hurt.

Earlier in the evening a police helicopter and vehicles carried out an unsuccessful search for an offender in the Hainford area following reports of a burglary.
