Letters are dropping on doormats at some 130 homes and businesses around Southtown Road and Bridge Road telling people about the potential improvements and asking for their thoughts.

The main feature of the project is to remove the lights on the Southtown Road junction with Station Road, including at the exit from Matalan car park, where drivers immediately meet another set of signals adding to congestion.

Along with the addition of right turn lanes, the aim is to keep traffic free-flowing, and to reduce queuing and the time taken to exit the car park.

The plans also show changes that will make the area more pedestrian and cyclist friendly by moving a crossing and linking it with an existing footpath.

A relocated bus stop on Southtown Road will also make it easier for buses to re-join traffic lanes.

Riverside Road in Gorleston is also in line for improvements.

There some 500 homes and businesses are being consulted on improvements that fit the same funding.

The scheme is looking to improve 1.2km of footway on the opposite side of the road to the water adding a new 220m section where currently no pavement exists and widening the whole length to a minimum of around 1.5m.

Martin Wilby, chair of Norfolk County Council’s environment, development and transport committees, said: “These proposals are part of the wider Transport for Great Yarmouth programme of projects, which aim to transform transport in and around the town over the next few years.

“We’d like to hear from anyone who uses these areas regularly. Information and comments received through the consultations will provide valuable local knowledge to help shape the final details of construction plans for the schemes.”

The deadline for comments on both schemes is 5pm on Friday October 5.
