The sparkling spectacle of Cromer’s New Year’s Day fireworks display on the pier attracts thousands of visitors.
It also provides a sight which is captured by many of them on their cameras as a keepsake of a memorable start to another promising year.
This year organisers are running a competition to turn the best shot from the event into the official poster promoting the following year.
And the North Norfolk News has teamed up with electrical retailer Bennett’s who are adding £300 worth of photo equipment to the prize.
It is the 14th year of the annual display which began in 2000 as a one-off millennium event and has evolved into one of Norfolk’s must-see events.
The day combines a chance to clear away the festive season cobwebs with a bracing afternoon at the seaside followed by ushering in the New Year in with a bang.
Some 8,000 people head to the resort for the evening which raises thousands of pounds for local charities as well as priming the kitty for the following year’s display.
The 5pm pyrotechnics are the highlight, but it is also a chance for people to enjoy an afternoon of fresh air, and some seaside food beforehand.
Other attractions around town include a 3pm fun run, and a “torchlight” procession from the churchyard at 4.30pm, with light-sabres and lanterns.
Organisers urge people to turn up early to make the most of the day, to grab a bite to eat and a good viewing spot.
The competition is open to children, adults, amateur and professionals alike who are being encouraged to bring their camera and get creative.
Chairman of the fireworks committee Jim Bond said: “We thought it would be great to launch the photography competition to inspire more people and to capture this fantastic event. We are looking for photographs that really capture the spirit of the event.”
Judges will be looking for images that capture the spirit of the event. Photographs must be taken at this year’s show. Entrants may enter no more than three different photographs.
Emailed entries in jpeg format should be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org and printed 7x5 versions via post to Firework Photography Competition, c/o Cromer Town Council Offices, North Lodge, Overstrand Road, Cromer, Norfolk, NR27 0AH.
