Belvedere Community Centre in Norwich celebrates its newly revamped garden

Members of a Norwich community centre have been celebrating the colourful transformation of the venue’s garden.
For the past year, an army of dedicated volunteers has been working together to revamp the overgrown garden at the Belvedere Community Centre, in Belvoir Street, and yesterday a special open day was held to show everyone the fruits of their efforts.
Sharon Betts, the chairman of the charity, said: “It is amazing what has been achieved. The garden looked like an overgrown jungle before and now it just looks amazing.”
The work that has been done to the garden, which has disabled access, includes planting an array of new flowers and plants, making the pathways more even, putting in benches and chairs, creating a new barbecue area, and putting up bird boxes.
Miss Betts said it had been a great team effort, and that the project had had support from Norwich City Council and businesses including Homebase.
About 250 people went along to enjoy the celebratory open day yesterday.
Miss Betts said: “It was an absolutely fantastic day and it also attracted lots of new faces to come to the centre and have a look at the garden.
“We enjoyed some beautiful music, and the children transformed the area with decorations, and lots of people donated tea, coffee and home-made cakes.”
She said that the centre had also registered with the National Gardens Scheme so it can help raise funds for other good causes.
Now the centre is looking for volunteers to help maintain the garden.
“We have a gardeners scheme for people to volunteer once a month to help with the upkeep of the garden,” Miss Betts said.
