About 2,000 rubber ducks made their way through the town via the River Waveney as they competed with each other in the Beccles Duck Race.

Up to 3,000 people watched on as the annual race saw a vast army of fancy dress ducks released by the Gillingham bridge in bright sunshine with their progress being reported on by a excited commentator in a boat.

As well as seeing which was the fastest moving duck, the vast array of spectators were entertained by pointing out the weirdest looking ducks, including a combat duck designed by 11-year-old Angus Buchanan from Barsham and one resembling a chef.

It is hoped that up to £5,000 will be raised for local youth groups, including sea and army cadets and martial arts team, from yesterday’s race which included two heats.

The winner of the best fancy dress corporate duck was the Beccles Angling Club while ducks belonging to a D. Lack and Living Property Lettings & Management won their respective races for individuals and businesses.

Co-organiser Loraine Loffstadt said: “It has been an absolutely fantastic day. We had a large crowd come out and everybody enjoyed themselves.

“It is a good family fun day to help raise money for local groups.

“I think this race is unique as we have fancy dress ducks.”

Sunday’s event also saw the crowd entertained by music supplied by Chevron Disco.
