Branch closure leaves market town with just one bank

A market town is going to be left with just one bank, after a branch announced it will be closing this year.
Customers of Barclays bank in Attleborough have received letters apologising for the closure, which will take place on August 3, 2018.
Attleborough will henceforth have a single Lloyds branch catering for a population of more than 10,000.
Kathryn Kitson, Community Banking Director for Barclays Suffolk and Norfolk said there will be no redundancies and that staff will be offered positions at other branches nearby.
Attleborough town mayor Jeremy Burton said: “This is really disappointing.
“We are already a large market town and we have a massive growth plan for 4,000 houses, with 1,500 already being built.
“It seems really short sighted, and the nearest branch is in Wymondham, so people who don’t have online banking will have to travel there.
“I find it hard to believe there are fewer customers using the branch because I use Barclays and it’s always busy.
“I think it will be very difficult for traders.
“It’s right in the centre of town, very convenient, the primary bank in Attleborough really.”
The branch, who do not own the building, will be hosting Tea and Teach sessions for customers wishing to explore alternatives to branch banking, and urged concerned customers to contact them to discuss alternative banking options, reminding people that everyday transactions may be carried out at the Post Office.
Ms Kitson said: “At the branch in Attleborough, customer usage has continued to decline and more than 75pc of the customers of the branch are already using online, mobile or telephone banking.
“We hope that the availability of the branches in Wymondham, Watton and Diss and access to services at the nearby Post Office in High Street along with our range of digital channels will help to ease the transition for our customers.
“Only 178 regular customers use the branch exclusively for their banking. We will be extending our opening hours at our Watton branch.
The branch will now open all week from the July 30, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 09.30am - 4.30pm, Wednesday 10am - 4.30pm.”
