A flock of good causes has been given a £33,000 hand out from the Aylsham Show after another successful summer event.

Retiring president and Itteringham farmer Jimmy Fowell handed out cheques to a range of representatives at the annual distribution of proceeds from the popular one day agricultural show and family day out held at Blickling Park, on August Bank Holiday Monday.

The event has given hundreds of thousands of pounds to local groups and organisations over its long history stretching back more than 60 years.

After the annual council meeting held at the Aylsham Motel, members elected North Norfolk businessman George Bell as president of the Aylsham Agricultural Show Association and Bill van Poortvliet, who farms at Banningham, was elected president-elect.

A cheque for £3,500 was presented to Peter Day on behalf of Reepham and District Rotary Club for East Anglia Children’s Hospices (Each) and other local charities.

Other awards included:

£2,000 – Each, Fakenham Support Group; Citizens Advice North Norfolk; Aylsham Recreation Ground; Aylsham and District Flower Club for Caister Lifeboat.

£1,250 - Rotary Club of Aylsham for Big C and East Anglian Air Ambulance and Aylsham Youth Club.

£1,000 - Aylsham Army Cadets; Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution; East Anglian Air Ambulance; Injured Jockey Fund for Isabel Thomsett Appeal Norfolk Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs; Norfolk Heart Trust for Sparks 4 Hearts; Priscilla Bacon Lodge Support Group.

£500 - Alzheimer’s Society; Marie Curie Cancer Care; MacMillan Cancer Support; Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research; Bryan Gunn Leukaemia Appeal; SSAFA Forces Help, Norfolk; Aylsham and District Royal British Legion; Norfolk & Norwich Association for the Blind; Victim Support; Leeway; Diabetes UK ,North Norfolk Group; Holt and District Farmers’ Club; Aylsham Old Peoples Welfare Association; Palling Volunteer Rescue Services for Sea Palling Lifeboat; Queen’s Diamond Jubilee 2012, Aylsham Town Council; Countryside Alliance Schools’ Day; United Norwich Kidney Patients Association.

  • They could probably make more for charity too if they hadn't priced out so many families from attending. Such a shame. I used to enjoy it. Now we can't afford to go despite it being on our door step!
