It was an important battle during the Persian War, in which the Greek allies defeated the Persian navy.

And a student has picked up a £100 prize for his work on the battle of Salamis in 480BC.

Aylsham Local History Society has set up an annual prize of £100 to be given to the winner of a new competition for students of the town's high school.

The work submitted can cover any aspect of history, from any period and subject chosen by the student, or a group of students working together.

This first year there were 10 entries and the prize was awarded to Daniel Simpson, 14. Entries from Jacob Tovell and Jamie Dawes were highly commended.

The chairman of the judges, Dr Vic Morgan, an historian at UEA, said: 'The judges were impressed with the range of subjects and the real passion the students showed for their subject.'

It is hoped that all the entries will be displayed at the Aylsham Heritage Centre.
