A 90-year-old volunteer’s tireless work was celebrated as she marked 50 years of fund-raising for the Leonard Cheshire Disability Home.
Audrey Holland, who lives in Swardeston, was presented with a letter of thanks from LCD chief executive, Claire Pelham and a garden planter as a gift from everyone at new LCD facility The Grove, in East Carleton.
For half a century Mrs Holland has served as chairman of the house committee and vice-chairman and chairman of the management committee.
In 2007, Mrs Holland was also awarded the League of Mercy medal, presented at a ceremony at Mansion House London.
She is currently undertaking one-to-one care with residents at The Grove.
Despite her obvious love for her work, Mrs Holland initially wasn’t sure whether volunteering was for her.
She said: “When I first started volunteering for Leonard Cheshire, I found it difficult getting in sometimes. My now late husband encouraged me to give it a try a couple more times and see how I got on.
“50 years later I’m still here! I regard The Grove as my second home.”
Neil Monk, LCD’s volunteer co-ordinator at The Grove, said: “Audrey serves as an inspiration to us all. Her story shows that, with a little perseverance, volunteering can be such a rewarding experience.
“There are a number of opportunities to volunteer with LCD, which may include working one to one with our disabled service users or being involved with community engagement to generate support for the charity.”
Leonard Cheshire Disability is the UK’s leading charity supporting disabled people. They support thousands of people in the UK with physical and learning disabilities.
