A Norfolk town is buzzing with rumours of plans for a new Dad’s Army film starring some of Hollywood’s best-known actors.

Thetford mayor Stuart Wright told those gathered at last night’s mayor’s charity ball in the town that there was talk of Golden Globe winner Toby Jones playing Captain Mainwaring and Bill Nighy playing Sergeant Arthur Wilson in a remake.

However, there has been no confirmation at this stage a film will definitely be made. There has been various speculation of a new Dad’s Army film in recent years but nothing has ever hit the silver screen.

If it were to be made, a film would be of great interest to people in Norfolk as many of the scenes were filmed in and around Thetford, which became the fictional Walmington-on-Sea in the television series.

Thetford has its own Dad’s Army Museum, which pays tribute to the programme, while Bressingham Steam and Gardens, near Diss, hosts an annual Dad’s Army and 1940s day, which this year takes place on May 18.

Mr Wright said if there was to be a film, it would be good for the area, “Anything that raises the profile of Dad’s Army raises the profile of Thetford,” he said.

He added that the Dad’s Army Museum helped to draw people into Thetford and that a film would only heighten people’s interest - but he stressed that it would be important any remake is of high-quality.

“We just hope that will pay reverence to the characters if they do make a film,” he said.

He also said it would be nice if some scenes were filmed in and around Thetford.

  • You cannot recreate comic genius with different scriptwriters and a new cast, Dad's army was so perfect, scripts and casting, that it cannot and should not be resurrected. you cannot recork a bottle of fine wine and expect it to taste the same 40 years later!

  • It's not a "rumour". If you read any decent newspaper today you will see the producer, director and scriptwriter are all named. Typical poor EDP journalism.

  • Mother and I would recommed casting Michael Fassbender to play the role of Private Pike. You're welcome, Whiley.

  • So rumours are "swirling" and the town is "buzzing." Such use of hyberbole is another poor example of lazy journalism from the EDP.

  • No, no. Please no remake! No matter how good the actors in it might be, it simply wouldn't be as good, as everyone would compare the cast with the original one. Let's leave the one and only original as we know it, because nothing will compare with it, irrespective of which film or TV stars take part. And also, how could anyone try to rewrite David Croft and Jimmy Perry's golden script?!
