While TV presenter Davina McCall goes the extra mile for Sport Relief, people in Norfolk are being called on to run, jog or walk one along the county’s famous coastline.
Great Yarmouth’s Golden Mile fundraiser will take place on Sunday, March 23.
The charity event, part of the UK-wide Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile, was officially launched today - with Mayor of Yarmouth, Councillor John Burroughs, braving wet and windy elements to kick-start the campaign.
Yarmouth’s Sport Relief fundraiser is open to people of all ages and abilities and is a chance transform the lives of people living in the UK and in some of the poorest countries through sport.
The annual event, nicknamed the Great Yarmouth Golden Mile, is organised by Great Yarmouth Borough Council and will see hundreds of runners take a scenic route along the Golden Mile seafront, starting and finishing at Merrivale Model Village, on Marine Parade.
Participants will set off in waves between 10.15am and 11.30am and people can choose to tackle a one mile, three mile or six mile course, depending on how many laps they take on.
Encouraging people to sign up, Mr Burroughs said: “This is a fantastic chance for people of all ages and abilities to get together and take part in a large community event, while raising much-needed cash for good causes.
“Most healthy people can jog or walk one mile so there is no excuse for not taking part.
“Run on your own, or with friends and family. Maybe dress up, or even tackle it on a Spacehopper. But whatever you decide, make sure you sign up online as soon as possible, as places are limited.”
About 300 people took part in the 2012 event.
To get involved, visit www.sportrelief.com and search for Great Yarmouth.
To enter, participants must pay a Sport Relief Mile administration fee of £6 for an adult, £3 for a child, and £15 for a family comprised of two adults and two children.
