An oil painting depicting a Victorian scene in Costessey could soon be bought by a parish council for the community.

Costessey Parish Council is hoping to secure the oil painting to add to its collection and display it to the public.

But the parish council is reluctant to spend the £160 asking price for the painting as it is dealing with budget cuts.

Instead they are appealing for people and groups in Costessey to step forward and help them buy the artwork by making small donations.

The painting shows a horse and trap emerging from a stick bridge which used to cross the ford over Longwater Lane.

It is thought to date from the late 19th century and was painted by artist Edward Littlewood.

If purchased from a private owner in Surrey, the painting would then be put on display with the rest of the council’s collection in the Rymarz Gallery at the Costessey Centre on Longwater Lane.

Costessey parish councillor Tim East, who is also a trained artist, said: “It would certainly add to our collection and again show part of our heritage that has long gone.

“We have lots of societies and bodies in Costessey who might consider making a contribution towards the painting.

“It is an opportunity too good to be missed.

“I think it is worth buying even though we are in severe austere times.

“It would help future generations to find out more about what Costessey used to look like.”

Edward Littlewood was painting in the mid to late 19th Century, and much of his work was done in the Norwich area.

Parish councillors will discuss the painting and its potential purchase at their next meeting on February 19.

  • perhaps tim east and others could donate some of their expenses toward it seriously though we are talking about £160 not £1600
