Police are investigating another incident of suspected arson on an estate which saw four attacks on the weekend after a car was believed to be doused in fuel and set alight.

A fire crew from Thetford was called to Elm Road at 3am this morning to reports of a small vehicle on fire.

Firefighters dealt with the blaze in 20 minutes, but a police spokesman said it is believed that the fire was started after some form of fuel was thrown over the car, a white Ford Focus, and ignited.

The car was parked outside the front of the home of its owner.

The owner, who did not want to be named, said the first he had known of it was when the car’s alarm sounded.

“We were all fast asleep and we heard the alarm at around 2.30am. We didn’t hear anything before that.

“When I looked outside the grill and front of the car was all on fire. The police and fire service haven’t told us much at all about how it happened,” he said.

Neighbours also reported hearing an explosion from the car before firefighters arrived.

The incident comes after trees and fences were set alight in Elm Road and Kimms Belt in the early hours of Sunday.

Families reported having to flee their homes after the fires, as flames shot up into the air just yards from properties.

The police spokesman said there was no evidence that this morning’s incident was linked to Sunday’s attacks at this point, but that officers would be making enquiries.

She added that anyone with information can come forward by calling 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
