The summer tournament, which attracts thousands of competitors and their families to the east coast every year, was officially opened by Yarmouth mayor, Cllr Marlene Fairhead, this morning. Matches will be played on the Britannia greens every day until September 20.

Tournament manager Derek Webster said loyal sponsors, supporters and fellow organisers help keep the festival going.

“Without the support of everyone connected to the Festival of Bowls it would be have been possible,” he said. Former player Mr Webster was last year awarded the British Empire Medal for his services to bowls and for raising ten of thousands of pounds for charity through the event.

This year’s special match will be the Under 30s vs the Veterans game at 2pm on August 31.

For more information on the tournament, including trophies and results, call the festival office on 01493 842791 or pick up a programme from Great Yarmouth Tourism office at Maritime House, 25 Marine Parade.
