She has played sport all her life but Annie Langstaff will have to draw on all her strength and fitness to complete a charity challenge that will take place over six days and cover 360 miles of Norfolk roads.
Mrs Langstaff, from Dereham, is planning to play one hole of golf at every one of the county’s 36 golf courses over the six days and to make it even more challenging, she is cycling to each club.
The 58-year-old former ladies captain of Bawburgh Golf Club was planning to complete the challenge last summer but illness forced her to postpone and she will now start on July 5.
“I got shingles last year so I couldn’t do it so I carried it forward to this summer,” she said. “I thought it would be a fun way to see Norfolk at the same time.”
Mrs Langstaff, who has lived in the town for 25 years after moving down from Yorkshire, will be raising money for Nelson’s Journey, the Norfolk-based charity which supports bereaved children.
She said: “The ladies captain always has a charity and I wanted to do something local and for children. I know that Nelson’s Journey is planning to open a new purpose-built headquarters this summer and I wanted to help with that.”
She added that planning the route had been something of a “logistical nightmare” but she estimated she needed to cover 60 miles a day to reach all 36 clubs in six days.
“A friend has done part of the route and I have been out on the bike practising parts of it. I need to stick to some of the quieter roads. I have also had to contact all the clubs and book a tee time but it is difficult because I don’t know how long I will be at each club.”
She also admitted she was not a fan of cycling. “I try to avoid it if I can,” she said. “I used to cycle when I was younger but I haven’t done it for a long time so I have had to go out quite a bit to get fit. I took up golf when I gave up hockey about 10 years ago and I really took to it. So I am looking forward to the golf.”
Mrs Langstaff, a self-employed book-keeper, is hoping to raise £2000 and said she was getting plenty of support from family and friends, including husband Minno who will be driving the route with her to carry the clubs. Other friends will be cycling alongside her on different days.
