An ancient bridge will be out for commission for four weeks after a hit and run incident caused serious damage.

Rushford Bridge, which carries Rushford Road over the Little Ouse between the A1066 and the Rushford Estate, was damaged over the Easter weekend.

A spokesman for Norfolk County Council said an unknown vehicle has caused 'serious damage' to a spandrel and parapet walls, with the bridge being too narrow to allow temporary vehicle barriers to be used.

The bridge, which is an ancient monument, was closed as soon as possible, according to the spokesman.

The closure is likely to be in place for around four weeks. A diversion will be put in place from the C147 at the bridge on to Rushford Road. Motorists will then be directed on to the A1088 at Euston and on to the A1066.
