While Alice fell down a rabbit hole to begin her adventures in the classic tale, on Sunday, September 7 families will be able to just stroll through the gates to the Bishop’s Garden to take part in lots of Wonderland fun.

Alice, the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter and many of the famous fantastical characters created by author Lewis Carroll will feature in the Norwich event. Called Alice in Bishopsland, it will be raising funds for Norwich-based charity The Matthew Project which supports people affected by drug and alcohol issues.

The Bishop of Norwich, the Rt Rev Graham James, said: “Julie and I are delighted to welcome supporters and friends of the Matthew Project to our garden on September 7. It will be transformed into a Wonderland with some of the surprises Alice experienced in Lewis Carroll’s famous story. Everyone is welcome, and I hope this further celebration of all the Matthew Project has done in its 30 year history will be filled with fun and friendship.”

Sharon Hulbert, media and fundraising manager for the charity, said: “We wanted to do something in the Bishop’s garden that would appeal to people of all ages as part of our 30th birthday celebrations. The idea of an Alice in Wonderland-themed event felt appropriate, fun and gave us plenty of scope to be creative.”

She added: “We are very grateful to the Bishop for giving us permission to use his gardens for our charity event. With more than four acres to explore this is an ideal venue for a family event such as this and we hope that grandparents, parents and children will all come along.”

Within the beautiful setting of the Bishop’s Garden there will be lots of activities inspired by the storybook.

These will include storytelling by Alice, the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, a Fairy Door Trail, The White Rabbit Treasure Hunt, a magician, giant games, and a fancy dress competition for adults and children to enter.

People will be able to have fun trying on costumes from the Maddermarket Theatre and have their photo taken in the Cheshire Cat Selfie Photo Booth, plus there will also be an Eat Me, Drink Me Tombola and the opportunity to enjoy tea and cakes.
