Police today said the driver who died after a collision between two lorries and a car on the A140 at Mendlesham was from the Ipswich area.

One of the lorry drivers involved has been arrested after a man driving a Renault Megane died, and his passenger - a seven-year-old girl - was seriously injured, yesterday.

The lorries and car collided near the Brockford Road junction, shortly before 11.20am, leading to the road being closed until early this morning.

An air ambulance, paramedics, police and five fire engines were sent to the scene.

The East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust initially reported “potentially serious injuries” among the casualties. At 7pm, Suffolk police confirmed the driver of the car, a man in his 40s, had been pronounced dead at the scene.

The seven-year-old girl, was airlifted to Norfolk and Norwich Hospital with serious injuries.

The lorry drivers also suffered injuries and were taken to Ipswich Hospital by land ambulance.

A 50-year-old man from the Wisbech area of Cambridgeshire was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and taken to Martlesham Police Investigation Centre for questioning.

He remained in custody this morning

An investigation is continuing into the cause of the collision, and the A140 was closed in both directions for 19 hours while an examination of the scene by officers from the Suffolk and Norfolk’s Serious Collision Investigation Team took place. It re-opening shortly before 6.30am today.

Any witnesses, including other motorists in the area at the time who may have dash cam footage, are asked to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Team on 101 quoting CAD 108 of 25 July.
