Drivers are being warned of delays after a car and a double decker bus collided on the A47 this afternoon.

Police received the call around 3.47pm, and the westbound carriageway of the A47 was blocked for almost three hours between Postwick and Trowse.

A police spokesman said the collision involved a double decker bus and a Renault Captur, and there were passengers on board the bus at the time.

Four fire crews attended, from Carrow, Sprowston, Earlham and Acle and extracted one casualty at the scene. The driver of the car was taken to hospital with chest pains.

The driver of the Routemaster bus, Don Grunbaum, said it had been carrying around 54 visitors to Norfolk with the Awayadays sightseeing company.

He said they had been travelling around 35 miles an hour, because the bus was “designed for London streets, not high speed driving”, when he heard a bang.

“At first I thought it was something mechanical or an electrical fault,” he said. “I pulled over to the side of the road and saw there was a vehicle in the barrier. I went round to the back of the bus and it was stoved in, including the stairway which meant people were trapped upstairs.”

He added the bus has since been recovered, and the passengers were uninjured.

“I am 99pc certain the bus will be rebuilt because it is worth quite a lot of money,” he added.

Some drivers have reported being at a standstill for more than two hours on the A47 while the vehicles were recovered.

By 7pm the road had reopened fully but police are warning there may still be delays.
