Work to complete the dualling of the A11 between Thetford and Barton Mills will begin within the next financial year, it has been announced.
Chancellor George Osborne confirmed in October’s comprehensive spending review that the government would press ahead with dualling the final nine-mile stretch of road between Thetford and Barton Mills, and 24 hours later roads minister Mike Penning confirmed funding was in place.
But since then, the Department for Transport (DfT) had only confirmed that work will start by 2015,
Today, roads minister Mike Penning confirmed works would begin in the financial year 2012-2013.
Mr Penning, who went on to outline time frames for a number of road improvemnets across the country within the next four years, said: “These schemes will deliver vital investment across the strategic road network, driving economic growth and boosting the UK economy.
“They will also provide much-needed additional capacity - easing congestion and making journey times more reliable for road users, including hauliers and commuters. For every pound invested on these schemes on average we will get back £7 of benefits to the economy with some delivering even higher returns.
“Transport provides the crucial links that allow people and businesses to prosper and we will continue to invest in schemes that reduce congestion and support economic growth.”

Let that be it! Keep Norfolk special, no duals into North Norfolk itself, we like it as it is and no more Tesco's. Don't like it? Move out!

I agree that this is good news for the area. But as a regular commuter into the county from the north I regularly suffer much longer delays than I have ever experienced on the A11. I would be extremely satisfied if there was only a 9 mile section of the A47A17 that was single carriageway. I hope that all the effortpressure that has been applied by various MPs, campaign groups etc have applied is now concentrated to improving this vital route into the north of the county, but I wont hold my breath!

Yes, about time but how about the Acle to Gt Yarmouth section of A47. Dual that and Norfolk takes off with Gt Yarmouth becoming a great port and ferry terminal that will provide lots of employment and really put Norfolk on the map.

The coalition government wants to call the next election in 2015 assuming a fixed five year term. The idea is to have the road built and open by the 2015 general election day which will probably be the first Thursday in May of that year.

Quote: About time too! For far too long Norwich has been left in the wilderness. End quote. I prefer the wilderness that’s what I like about Norfolk.

Let's hope when the time comes there will not be a reason for another delay. Talking of Mike Penning, this is the man who is considering fining cyclists if they cause a death on the roads. This is the same man who i asked my local MP, to ask him to look into making it compolsery for cyclists to wear helmets. He said he felt it was up to the individual cyclists if they want to wear helmets. What a cop out. Call me cynical, but maybe he thinks by fining cyclists it will help to fill up our empty!!! coffers in Goverment.
