A friend of Helen Lovegrove, who died after a car crash in Barnham, near Thetford, has described her as a 'kind-hearted and caring person'.

Miss Lovegrove, who lived in Magdalen Street in Thetford, was a passenger in a Skoda Octavia which was in collision with a Vauxhall Corsa on the A134 on Wednesday, May 17.

She died at the scene of the crash.

The 47-year-old was born in Essex and lived in Horsham, West Sussex, before moving to Thetford.

Caroline Vincent said Miss Lovegrove volunteered in various charity shops, looked after her parents, and was well-known around the town.

She said: 'Helen was such a kind-hearted and caring person who didn't have much herself but would give you the coat off her back.

'She had a wicked sense of humour and when she laughed you couldn't help but laugh along with her.

'Once you had met her you never forgot her and everyone is shocked and devastated that she is gone.'

The crash happened at around at around 10.45am and closed the road for several hours.

The male driver of the Skoda, who is in his 50s and from the Thetford area, was taken to the West Suffolk Hospital for treatment.

And the female driver of the Corsa, who is in her early 20s and from the Dereham area, remains in a serious condition at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, after sustaining leg and internal injuries.

Town councillor John Newton, whose ward includes Magdalen Street, said: 'These tragic events are absolutely awful. My thoughts go out to her family. It is sad to lose someone so close to the town.'

Anyone who saw either of the vehicles prior to the accident, or the crash itself, is asked to call the Serious Collision Investigation Team at Suffolk Police on 101, quoting CAD number 129 of Wednesday, May 17.
